Artist Statement
I am a painter of ideas as much as I am a painter of places and people. Through landscape, figurative, and narrative oil painting, I explore how light can transform ordinary subjects into vessels of meaning, memory, and connection. Light serves as both a visual phenomenon and a metaphor throughout my work, revealing the beauty, hope, and emotional resonance that often exist beneath the surface of everyday experience.
My paintings draw from direct observation, personal reflection, poetry, and an enduring fascination with the natural world. I am particularly interested in the relationship between the constancy of nature and the questions that shape human experience. The faithful return of the seasons, the movement of light across a landscape, and the way color shifts throughout the day offer a visual language that speaks to both permanence and change. Through symbolism, color relationships, and carefully orchestrated compositions, I seek to create paintings that invite contemplation rather than merely description.
As an artist and educator, I am deeply invested in the study of painting itself. My practice explores both historical and contemporary approaches to oil painting, blending direct and indirect techniques to achieve luminosity, atmosphere, and depth. While oil painting remains my primary medium, my work is enriched by experience with watercolor, acrylic painting, drawing, and interdisciplinary studio practices. Poetry also plays an important role in my creative process, often serving as a companion to my paintings and helping me further investigate themes of identity, belonging, hope, and transformation.
I am drawn to subjects that encourage viewers to pause, reflect, and engage emotionally. In a culture often dominated by division, cynicism, and distraction, I seek to create work that responds with attentiveness, wonder, and compassion. Rather than focusing solely on life's struggles, I am interested in revealing the beauty that persists within them—the moments of light that remind us of our shared humanity and the possibility of hope. Through paint, I aim to create spaces where viewers can encounter both the world around them and the deeper meanings that illuminate it.
